The Bitter Disappointment

Babylon

    1. Those who worship the beast will get plagues (Revelation 16:19)
    2. Harlot - Apostate church (Revelation 17:1-5)
    3. In union with Governments (Revelation 17:1-5)
    4. Mother of Harlots (Revelation 17:1-5)
    5. God's people called out of her (Revelation 18:1-4)

Revelation 16:1-2

Then I heard a loud voice from the temple, saying to the seven angels, “Go and pour out on the earth the seven bowls of the wrath of God.” 2 So the first angel went and poured out his bowl on the earth; and it became a loathsome and malignant sore on the people who had the mark of the beast and who worshiped his image.

The plagues fall on the people who worship the mark of the beast and not God's people.

Revelation 16:19

19 The great city was split into three parts, and the cities of the nations fell. Babylon the great was remembered before God, to give her the cup of the wine of His fierce wrath.

The plagues fall on the city of Babylon. The city represents a spiritual city and not an actual city.

Revelation 17:1-5

Then one of the seven angels who had the seven bowls came and spoke with me, saying, “Come here, I will show you the judgment of the great harlot who sits on many waters, 2 with whom the kings of the earth committed acts of immorality, and those who dwell on the earth were made drunk with the wine of her immorality.” 3 And he carried me away in the Spirit into a wilderness; and I saw a woman sitting on a scarlet beast, full of blasphemous names, having seven heads and ten horns. 4 The woman was clothed in purple and scarlet, and adorned with gold and precious stones and pearls, having in her hand a gold cup full of abominations and of the unclean things of her immorality, 5 and on her forehead a name was written, a mystery, “BABYLON THE GREAT, THE MOTHER OF HARLOTS AND OF THE ABOMINATIONS OF THE EARTH.”

The judgement would fall on the great harlot (unfaithful woman; the unfaithful woman represents an apostate church) that sits on the water (people). She commits fornication with the kings of the earth. The apostate church makes a union with kings (governments) instead basing its trust in Christ. A woman (a church) sitting on a scarlet beast (a power). Being the mother of harlots means that the daughters that are harlots are churches that also aren't following the bible but following to a degree the teachings of the mother church.

Revelation 18:1-4

After these things I saw another angel coming down from heaven, having great authority, and the earth was illumined with his glory. 2 And he cried out with a mighty voice, saying, “Fallen, fallen is Babylon the great! She has become a dwelling place of demons and a prison of every unclean spirit, and a prison of every unclean and hateful bird. 3 For all the nations have drunk of the wine of the passion of her immorality, and the kings of the earth have committed acts of immorality with her, and the merchants of the earth have become rich by the wealth of her sensuality.” 4 I heard another voice from heaven, saying, “Come out of her, my people, so that you will not participate in her sins and receive of her plagues;

God's people will be called out of babylon. That means God will call all his people out of all apostate churches to follow him. The plagues will not fall on those people that come out.

The Fall of Babylon

    1. Babylon Falls (Revelation 18:1-2)
    2. Judgement comes on all (Revelation 14:6-7)
    3. Judgement starts in 1844 (Revelation 14:7)

Revelation 18:1-2

After these things I saw another angel coming down from heaven, having great authority, and the earth was illumined with his glory. 2 And he cried out with a mighty voice, saying, “Fallen, fallen is Babylon the great! She has become a dwelling place of demons and a prison of every unclean spirit, and a prison of every unclean and hateful bird.

Revelation 14:6-7

6 And I saw another angel flying in midheaven, having an eternal gospel to preach to those who live on the earth, and to every nation and tribe and tongue and people; 7 and he said with a loud voice, “Fear God, and give Him glory, because the hour of His judgment has come; worship Him who made the heaven and the earth and sea and springs of waters.”
The hour of judgement has come means it is here and going to continue in future tense. This message is occurring in the world not in heaven where God is and it is intended for everyone. We are to gvie glory to God by respecting, living an ethical life by making good choices, and put God before ourselves. The fear in this situation isn't fear like being scared but fear in regard to respect. The hour of his judgement is referenced in Daniel 8:14 which states that the judgement will begin in . See topic on the 2300 Day prophecy.

Exodus 20:8-11

8 “Remember the sabbath day, to keep it holy. 9 Six days you shall labor and do all your work, 10 but the seventh day is a sabbath of the Lord your God; in it you shall not do any work, you or your son or your daughter, your male or your female servant or your cattle or your sojourner who stays with you. 11 For in six days the Lord made the heavens and the earth, the sea and all that is in them, and rested on the seventh day; therefore the Lord blessed the sabbath day and made it holy.

Notice that the wording in verse 11 is very similar to the end of verse 7 in Revelations 14. These verses also help us to know which God we are serving.

Daniel 8:22, 24, & 25

22 He gave me instruction and talked with me and said, “O Daniel, I have now come forth to give you insight with understanding. 24 “Seventy weeks have been decreed for your people and your holy city, to finish the transgression, to make an end of sin, to make atonement for iniquity, to bring in everlasting righteousness, to seal up vision and prophecy and to anoint the most holy place. 25 So you are to know and discern that from the issuing of a decree to restore and rebuild Jerusalem until Messiah the Prince there will be seven weeks and sixty-two weeks; it will be built again, with plaza and moat, even in times of distress.

The 70 Day prophecy was the explanation of what Daniel didn't understand in Daniel 8:14. During this 70 week (490 years) time period were to repent from their sins and annoint the most holy. This time period is cut off of or determined from the 2300 day prophecy. This began with the rebuilding of the temple (See Ezra and Nehemiah) but 69 weeks into the 70 week prophecy, the messiah was to be expected.

Revelation 14:8

8 And another angel, a second one, followed, saying, “Fallen, fallen is Babylon the great, she who has made all the nations drink of the wine of the [b]passion of her immorality.”

Bablyon has fallen which is a religious power.

Revelation 10:1-11

I saw another strong angel coming down out of heaven, clothed with a cloud; and the rainbow was upon his head, and his face was like the sun, and his feet like pillars of fire; 2 and he had in his hand a little book which was open. He placed his right foot on the sea and his left on the land; 3 and he cried out with a loud voice, as when a lion roars; and when he had cried out, the seven peals of thunder [a]uttered their voices. 4 When the seven peals of thunder had spoken, I was about to write; and I heard a voice from heaven saying, “Seal up the things which the seven peals of thunder have spoken and do not write them.” 5 Then the angel whom I saw standing on the sea and on the land lifted up his right hand to heaven, 6 and swore by Him who lives forever and ever, who created heaven and the things in it, and the earth and the things in it, and the sea and the things in it, that there will be delay no longer, 7 but in the days of the voice of the seventh angel, when he is about to sound, then the mystery of God is finished, as He [b]preached to His servants the prophets. 8 Then the voice which I heard from heaven, I heard again speaking with me, and saying, “Go, take the [c]book which is open in the hand of the angel who stands on the sea and on the land.” 9 So I went to the angel, telling him to give me the little book. And he *said to me, “Take it and eat it; it will make your stomach bitter, but in your mouth it will be sweet as honey.” 10 I took the little book out of the angel’s hand and ate it, and in my mouth it was sweet as honey; and when I had eaten it, my stomach was made bitter. 11 And they *said to me, “You must prophesy again concerning many peoples and nations and tongues and kings.”

This study will investigate the Great Disappointment that occurred.

Revelation 10:1-3

I saw another strong angel coming down out of heaven, clothed with a cloud; and the rainbow was upon his head, and his face was like the sun, and his feet like pillars of fire; 2 and he had in his hand a little book which was open. He placed his right foot on the sea and his left on the land; 3 and he cried out with a loud voice, as when a lion roars; and when he had cried out, the seven peals of thunder uttered their voices.

There is an angel that has a book or a scroll in his hand. This book is little and open. The angel is standing on the sea and the earth which represents populated and unpopulated places which shows it is meant for the entire earth.

Daniel 12:4

4 But as for you, Daniel, conceal these words and seal up the book until the end of time; many will go back and forth, and knowledge will increase.”

What was Daniel supposed to do with this book? He was to shut the book until the time of the end. At the time of the end, this entire book would be opened to humans understanding. Throughout history portions of this book was understood. So which portion was sealed up?

Daniel 8:26

26 “The vision of the evenings and mornings which has been told is true; But keep the vision secret, For it pertains to many days in the future.”

The vision was the 2300 Day prophecy which was the book that was sealed.

Revelation 10:4

4 When the seven peals of thunder had spoken, I was about to write; and I heard a voice from heaven saying, “Seal up the things which the seven peals of thunder have spoken and do not write them.”

This verse will be looked at further along in this study.

Revelation 10:5-7

5 Then the angel whom I saw standing on the sea and on the land lifted up his right hand to heaven, 6 and swore by Him who lives forever and ever, who created heaven and the things in it, and the earth and the things in it, and the sea and the things in it, that there will be delay no longer, 7 but in the days of the voice of the seventh angel, when he is about to sound, then the mystery of God is finished, as He [a]preached to His servants the prophets.

Revelation 10:8

8 Then the voice which I heard from heaven, I heard again speaking with me, and saying, “Go, take the book which is open in the hand of the angel who stands on the sea and on the land.”

He is given the instruction to take the book which is in the hand of the angel.

Revelation 10:9

9 So I went to the angel, telling him to give me the little book. And he *said to me, “Take it and eat it; it will make your stomach bitter, but in your mouth it will be sweet as honey.”

We normally don't think about eating a book but look at Jeremiah 15:16. In Jeremiah it describes him eating the words of God. The word of God is referred to as the bread of life meaning that as we study it, it becomes a part of us.

Revelation 10:10

10 I took the little book out of the angel’s hand and ate it, and in my mouth it was sweet as honey; and when I had eaten it, my stomach was made bitter.

What was said would happen in verse 9 is what happened in verse 10. This occurred in the early advent movement when they believed God was coming back in 1844 and they got the time line wrong. It started out sweat to the taste but ended up being a bitter experience.

Revelation 10:11

11 And they *said to me, “You must prophesy again concerning many peoples and nations and tongues and kings.”

How difficult would it have been to have to go and prophecy again when it was applied incorrectly. God already knew it would happen and this is why he gave us these words.
